The airport is located about 24 km from downtown, but considering the traffic in Cairo, it would take about an hour or an hour and half to reach the center of the city.
If you want a pick up from the airport to you desired hotel, you should make all the arrangements before coming, unless you know your way. There are also taxis available from the airport. A lot of taxis wait at the airports for tourists and it's the most convinient way to get around the city. The fares of the taxis go higher in jammed hours and at night, but it should not exceed 35 pounds from the airport to any part of Cairo. Also, the fare should be agreed on ahead of time.
There is a minibus in front of Terminal 1 that goes to Tahrir Square (Midan Tahrir). But it's very slow and sometimes very crowded.
