Egyptian Museum
A main attraction for Cairo is the Egyptian Museum. It is full of antiquities, mummies, Tutankhamen's collection, and lots more.
Formally known as The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, this is the showcase of one of the world's oldest culture's history. Home to the largest collection of Ancient Egyptian artefacts in the world, it's a fascinating glimpse into the Pharaonic period in Egyptian history and the New Kingdom, which began in 1500BC. Artefacts such as coins and papyrus sections offer a chronological history of the country, and replicas and “modern papyrus” are available in the gift shop should you wish to take home a souvenir.
Located right in the heart of Cairo on the Maydan al-Tahrir square, the Egyptian Museum is a central point in the city in both practical and historic terms. Entrance is currently priced at 20LE for adults and 10LE for children, but entrance to the separate “mummies rooms” where you can see the mummified pharaohs laid in state is charged separately (an additional 40LE for adults, 20LE for children), as is the use of a camera in the museum (10LE without flash, 100LE for video cameras).
